2022 ICTP Dirac Medal Winners Announced

ICTP has awarded its 2022 Dirac Medal to three distinguished physicists "for groundbreaking and mathematically rigorous contributions to the understanding of the statistical mechanics of classical and quantum physical systems". The 2022 Dirac Medallists are:
  • Joel L. Lebowitz, Center for Mathematical Sciences Research, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, USA
  • Elliott H. Lieb, Princeton University, USA
  • David P. Ruelle, Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, France
The three physicists have contributed important work in the field of statistical mechanics that has very significantly deepened and expanded our mathematical understanding of physical systems in many new directions.

ICTP Celebrates Diploma Programme Graduates

Some 43 young scientists from 26 countries graduated from ICTP's Postgraduate Diploma Programme during a ceremony held at ICTP on Friday 26 August. As a result of their ICTP studies, many of the students have been accepted to doctoral or master's programmes at top universities around the world; others will return to their home countries to share their knowledge with colleagues and students. The event included a keynote lecture by ICTP Dirac Medallist Dam Thanh Son on "Particles and Quasiparticles: Between Particle and Condensed Matter Physics". Meet ICTP's Diploma Graduates: Johann Sebastian Quenta Raygada

One of the latest students to join the esteemed ranks of Diploma graduates is Johann Sebastian Quenta Raygada of Peru. Thanks to the research experience he gained through the Postgraduate Diploma Programme, under the steady guidance of ICTP mathematical physicist Pavel Putrov, Johann was accepted to a master's programme at the University of Burgundy in France. Fun and Games at ICTP

In what has become a popular, much anticipated social event at ICTP, the annual Table Tennis Tournament was organised from 18 to 21 July, bringing together more than 45 participants from all ICTP sections, including Diploma, masters and PhD students, postdocs, and ICTP staff in a series of friendly matches in singles and doubles categories. “Social events that bring the ICTP community together sharing similar hobbies are incredibly empowering, motivating and always useful,” said ICTP Director Atish Dabholkar, a skilled player who took third place in the singles category.

Postdoctoral Opportunities

ICTP is accepting applications for the following two postdoc fellowships. Both have deadlines of 30 September 2022:
  • Opportunity for early-career computational scientists: applicants should have a strong interest and demonstrated experience in the application of Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence or data science methods to any of the fields of interest of ICTP (physics, mathematics, chemistry, life and earth sciences and related disciplines). Experience in HPC technology and programming in massively parallel environments is highly desirable. Read more...
  • Research focus on study of collective behaviour: this position in ICTP's Quantitative Life Sciences section starts in early 2023 and focuses on the study of collective behaviour in bird flocks, midget swarms and bacterial colonies.
