Deadline Extended: Call for Proposals ICTP's 2024 Scientific CalendarICTP is planning its 2024 offering of conferences, workshops and schools—also known as its Scientific Calendar—and seeks proposals from the international scientific community for activities to include. The deadline for 2024 activity proposals has been extended to 31 May 2023.ICTP Scientific Calendar activities attract thousands of participants to the Centre, or online, every year, offering a unique opportunity for scientists from developing and emerging countries—the main target of the activities—to receive training not available in their home countries, and to meet with ICTP’s international network of scientists. New for 2024, ICTP is pleased to announce that the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation will be funding one of its Scientific Calendar activities for that year. For more details and to submit a proposal online, go to the Scientific Calendar proposal guidelines page. Read more ...
Quantum Hackathon Inspires InnovationStudents from across the globe travelled to ICTP last week to work together and learn about quantum computing at the ICTP-Quantinuum Hackathon. Participants from the end of their undergraduate studies all the way up to post-doctoral researchers were introduced to innovative techniques and ideas by tutors from both ICTP and industrial partners such as international quantum computing company Quantinuum. The event culminated in a two-day coding competition, in which participants were divided into teams of five, each with an industrial mentor. See who the winners were. Read more ...
ICTP, University of Rwanda Renew Agreement of Partner InstituteICTP and the University of Rwanda (UR) have renewed their commitment to developing research excellence and quality higher education in Rwanda by signing an agreement to further support and enhance the East African Institute for Fundamental Research (EAIFR), an ICTP partner institute in Kigali. The agreement, signed by ICTP Director Atish Dabholkar and University of Rwanda Acting Vice Chancellor Dr. Didas Kayihura Muganga on 19 April 2023, extends the partnership for five years. ICTP-EAIFR opened in 2018 and offers the same quality research and educational opportunities for which ICTP is world-renowned, but at a location more easily accessible to African scientists. A New Era for ICTP's Book Donation ProgrammeOne of the many exceptional initiatives envisioned by Nobel Laureate and ICTP founder Abdus Salam was ICTP's Book Donation Programme to universities in developing countries. This scheme fully expresses Salam’s lifetime leitmotif: to bring scientists from the developing world out of isolation, bridging the gap between "North" and "South". Read how the programme is adapting to a new era dominated by the circulation of electronic publications. Read more ...
An Interview with the 2022 Ramanujan Prize WinnerSenegalese mathematician Mouhamed Moustapha Fall was presented with the 2022 DST-ICTP-IMU Ramanujan Prize on Thursday 13 April at ICTP (view the ceremony on ICTP's YouTube channel). Fall, an ICTP Diploma Programme alumnus, is the president of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Senegal. "This prize means a lot to me, as it is aimed at "young" people who are "from developing countries". A young mathematician from a developing country might be very rare, particularly in the case of African countries, where research is often neither well developed nor acknowledged."
