ICTP and IBM announced that the 2026 Richard Feynman Prize in Quantum Computing has been awarded to Ignacio Cirac of the Max-Planck-Institute for Quantum Optics. The prize acknowledges Cirac’s central role in establishing the theoretical foundations of quantum information processing, profoundly influencing both experimental realizations and theoretical developments across modern physics. The award ceremony was held on 21 April. Read more ...

ICTP Reaches Important Milestones Towards International Science Alliance

A key pillar of ICTP's new strategy plan involves the development an International Science Alliance, a network of scientific partners with ICTP at its core that will help the centre multiply its impact across the world. ICTP has recently made important progress in this direction, after a series of high-level meetings attended by Director Atish Dabholkar at key Indian agencies and research institutes. Read more ...

ICTP Researchers Stochastic Thermodynamics Application to Hearing Sheds light on Sensory Process

Our ears are sophisticated devices that can adapt to a wide range of sound intensities. An essential role in this process is played by highly specialised cells in our inner ears, whose characteristic protrusions resemble hair and are therefore called hair bundles. A group of researchers in ICTP’s Quantitative Life Sciences section, and their international collaborators, have recently shown that these tiny organelles behave like complex and very versatile machines. ICTP Releases Two New 'Distinguished Conversation' Videos

As part of the series of Distinguished Conversations between ICTP Director Atish Dabholkar and eminent scientists who have visited ICTP, two new videos have been released. One showcases a conversation with Dirac Medalist Ashoke Sen, one of the world’s best-known string theorists; another presents a discussion with Ignacio Cirac the inaugural recipient of the ICTP-IBM Feynman Prize for Quantum Computing. ICTP 2.0 Campaign Update: Lighting the Way

Officially launched in October 2025, ICTP's new strategic plan 'ICTP 2.0' sets out an ambitious vision to strengthen ICTP’s global impact. A related fundraising campaign, which supports core initiatives such as the International Science Alliance and the International Consortium for Scientific Computing, has already generated strong momentum from supporters.
