Winners of ICTP Prize 2023 Honoured at CeremonyMohit Kumar Jolly from India and Xinan Zhou from China shared the 2023 ICTP Prize and were honoured for their ground-breaking research at a ceremony held at ICTP in August. Although their research interests are far apart along the broad spectrum of physics, both have made remarkable and novel contributions to their respective fields by developing new mathematical and computational methods with approaches rooted in theoretical physics. An interview with Jolly can be read here, and one with Zhou can be read here.Read more ...
ICTP Meeting Focusses on Dramatic Polar Climate ChangesWhat are the connections and roles of the Earth's polar regions to the global climate system? As average global temperatures rise, what will be the long-term effects of melting sea ice? These questions were at the heart of a recent school and workshop, held at ICTP, that brought together international experts on the Arctic and Antarctic to discuss the interactions between the cryosphere, ocean and atmosphere within the polar regions, and how ongoing changes in the polar regions are affecting regional and global climate. The changes have important implications not only for the Earth's climate but also for ecosystems and human society. Read more ...
Walter Kohn Prize 2024 AnnouncedICTP and the Quantum ESPRESSO Foundation have announced the awarding of their 2024 Walter Kohn Prize to Rafael Gonzalez Hernandez, a professor at the Universidad del Norte, Colombia, for his ground-breaking work in uncovering the physics and properties of altermagnetism, an unconventional magnetic state of matter, and for his ab initio predictions of related effects in real materials. Gonzalez Hernandez's work has paved the way for experimental validation of altermagnetism, which is considered a new branch of magnetism. Read more ...
