 2025 ICTP Dirac Medal Goes to Gravity ExplorersICTP has awarded its 2025 Dirac Medal to four theoretical physicists who have redefined our understanding of gravity: Gary Gibbons, Cambridge University, UK; Gary Horowitz, University of California Santa Barbara, USA; Roy Kerr, University of Canterbury, New Zealand; Robert Wald, University of Chicago, USA. The award recognizes “their landmark contributions which have significantly shaped the study of general relativity across many generations.  Two Diploma Students Share 2025 Qaisar and Monika Shafi PrizeTwo of this year’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme’s top students have been chosen as recipients of the Qaisar and Monika Shafi Prize, an annual award given to the most outstanding scholars in the programme. William Hendarto of Indonesia, who completed a Diploma in mathematics, and Komal Rubab, a Diploma graduate in condensed matter physics from Pakistan, shared the 2025 prize. Read more ... | |
 ICTP Prize CeremonyICTP awarded its 2024 ICTP Prize to two researchers who, although in different fields, exhibit notable creativity in their work.  ICTP Research Using AI Sheds New Light on Earth’s Inner CoreICTP scientists Zhi Li and Sandro Scandolo have applied AI methods to study the microscopic structure of the Earth’s inner core, investigating the role played by silicon—one of the main light elements in the core’s iron alloy. Their results show that silicon profoundly affects the way atoms arrange under extreme pressure and temperature conditions, a finding that could explain why seismic waves travel only very slowly through the inner core.  Harmonic Analysis in Eastern Africa: The 2025 ICTP-EAUMP Summer SchoolEvery year, ICTP and the Eastern African Universities Mathematics Programme (EAUMP) organize a summer school on important mathematical topics. This year the school, which was held in Kigali, Rwanda, focussed on harmonic analysis, the study of oscillatory phenomena like the vibrating strings of a guitar or oceanic tides, from the mathematical point of view.
