ICTP at World Science Forum 2022

ICTP joined up with SESAME to host a session on 8 December at the 2022 World Science Forum on "Physics and Accelerators for Science and Social Justice".
ICTP scientist Kate Shaw moderated the session, which addressed how networks of researchers and multi-disciplinary scientific facilities can bring together global scientific communities, where the mission of advancing science intermixes finely with a firm societal commitment. ICTP signs agreement with South African institute

ICTP has signed an agreement with South Africa's National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences (NITheCS) to strengthen their collaboration and support of basic and computational science in South Africa. The signing, which took place at the World Science Forum 2022 in Cape Town, paves the way for joint research, education and visiting opportunities as well as collaboration with ICTP's partner institute in Rwanda, the East African Institute for Fundamental Research (EAIFR). Walter Kohn Prize 2022 Announced

The 2022 Walter Kohn Prize for quantum-mechanical materials and molecular modeling has been awarded to Debashree Ghosh, of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in Kolkata, India. The prize recognises her "pathbreaking work in developing novel quantum chemical tools for materials design and the study of biological function. Combining techniques from physics, chemistry and biology, her work has made important advances in our understanding of strongly correlated materials and complex biological systems." Read more ...


ICTP Prize 2022 Announced

The 2022 ICTP Prize is awarded to two outstanding Iranian cosmologists: Shant Baghram of the Sharif University of Technology and Mohammad Hossein Namjoo of the Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences. The two share the prize for their pioneering contributions to developing robust theoretical, computational and statistical frameworks to compare theoretical predictions for various cosmological and astrophysical phenomena with high-precision observational data.


Meet ICTP's Diploma Graduates: Huma Nawaz

Since its inception in 1991, more than 1000 students have graduated from ICTPs' Postgraduate Diploma Programme, roughly 28% of whom are female. Worldwide, women constitute a decided minority in the physics community. Huma Nawaz, a student from Pakistan, is among the graduates of the latest class of the ICTP Postgraduate Diploma Programme. The Programme has seen a consistent rise in the percentage of women in the last few years, reaching almost parity between male and female students.

In an interview, Nawaz talks about how she decided to come to ICTP, her plans and wishes for the future, and her connections with the Centre's founder, Abdus Salam. Read more ...


Medical Physics Achievement

On 14 December, ICTP's Masters in Medical Physics (MMP) programme celebrated the graduation of 22 students from its two-year advanced training programme run jointly with the University of Trieste. The students, representing 16 mainly developing countries, join a growing number of MMP alumni--120 from 64 countries since the programme began eight years ago--who are equipped with the know-how and skills to contribute to the health of their home countries. Research excellence

ICTP is proud to announce that climate scientist and head of the Earth System Physics' section Filippo Giorgi has been named on the 2022 Highly Cited Researchers list from Clarivate. Filippo Giorgi is the only scientist from an institution in Trieste to make the list. The Highly Cited Researchers 2022 are scientists who have published multiple highly cited papers, ranking in the top 1% by citations for field and year over the last decade. Of all the world’s researchers, they are one in 1,000. Read more ...


Welcome to ICTP!

An informal welcome ceremony for the new class of the Diploma students and new postdocs took place on Thursday 15 December 2022.
ICTP's Director Atish Dabholkar was joined by colleagues to welcome all new students and postdocs and share information on activities and services on campus.


ICTP’s 2023 Scientific Calendar now online

The Center has just published its 2023 Scientific Calendar online. This is ICTP’s rich offering of scientific conferences, workshops and seminars anticipated for the coming calendar year. ICTP's 2023 Scientific Calendar activities will take place not only at its main campus in Trieste, Italy, but also throughout the world. Lecturers in past activities have included Nobel Laureates and Fields Medallists, providing conferences attendees with unparalleled access to some of the top thinkers in the world.
