Promoting Gender Equality in ScienceICTP, together with the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), a UNESCO Programme Unit based in Trieste, celebrated the 2023 International Day for Women and Girls in Science with the screening of two short documentary films highlighting success stories of women scientists from the Republic of Congo and China. This was followed by a public debate on the role of women in science. The event was recorded and can be viewed on ICTP's YouTube channel.Read more... | |
DST-ICTP-IMU Ramanujan Prize AnnouncedMouhamed Moustapha Fall, Professor and President of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Senegal, has been awarded the 2022 DST-ICTP-IMU Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians from Developing Countries. Fall received the Prize for his outstanding work in the theory of Partial Differential Equations. His research has given important contributions to the classical theory of constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in Riemannian manifolds, its extension to the nonlocal case and its connection to the general theory of fractional partial differential equations. Science for SustainabilityScience plays a key role in the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes 17 global goals for issues ranging from education to climate to gender equality. Celebrating Optics ExcellenceICTP celebrated the recent recipients of the ICO/ICTP Gallieno Denardo Award with a ceremony during the Centre's Winter College on Optics: Terahertz Optics and Photonics in February. The winners were: for 2021, David Hayrapetyan from the Russian-Armenian University at Yerevan, Armenia; for 2022, VR Supradeepa from the Center for Nano Science and Engineering, IISc Bangalore, India; and for 2023, Muhammad Qasim Mehmood from the Information Technology Institute of the Punjab at Lahore, Pakistan. ICTP/IAEA Sandwich Training Education ProgrammeThrough its Sandwich Training Educational Programme (STEP), ICTP and its UN partner, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), offer fellowships to PhD students from developing countries in the fields of physics, mathematics and related fields. With a STEP fellowship, PhD students study at their home universities but have the financial support to visit ICTP or a collaborating institute for a three- to six-month stay each year for up to three successive years. Fellows work on their PhD theses with their advisors at their home institutes and co-advisors at the hosting institutes. Their PhD is awarded at their home institutes. HECAP Short-term VisitsThe ICTP High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics (HECAP) section offers every year a number of grants for short-term visits. The purpose of the visits is to perform theoretical studies in HECAP's areas of expertise and in close interaction with the Section's resident staff and visiting scientists. Master of Advanced Studies in Medical PhysicsThe Master of Advanced Studies in Medical Physics (MMP) is a two-year advanced training programme run jointly by the ICTP and the University of Trieste. The programme is designed to provide young, promising graduates of physics or related fields (mainly from developing countries) with postgraduate theoretical and clinical training so that they may be recognised as clinical medical physicists in their home countries.
