ICTP Launches Salam Centennial Year

In 2026, ICTP celebrates the centennial of its founder, Abdus Salam, who would have turned 100 on 29 January 2026. The year was launched with a roundtable on "Opportunities and Challenges of Quantum Science and Technology", featuring renowned scientists from academia and industry who discussed the impact of quantum developments on society and the need to assure that quantum technology can be accessed by and will benefit all. Salam Distinguished Lectures 2026

ICTP's 2026 Salam Distinguished Lecture Series featured two distinguished researchers in quantum science and technology: Peter Zoller of the University of Innsbruck, Austria, and Ignacio Cirac of the Max-Planck Institut für Quantenoptik, Germany. Over a series of lectures from 27 to 29 January, the two offered expert insight into the series' theme: "From Quantum Information to Transformative Technologies—A Journey of Remarkable Discoveries". Spirit of Salam 2026 Awardees Announced

The family of ICTP founder and Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam has revealed the recipients of the 2026 Spirit of Abdus Salam Award: Karim Aoudia (posthumously), a geophysics researcher and former acting head of ICTP's Earth System Physics section; Mahbubul Alam Majumdar, a professor of physics in Bangladesh; and ICTP's Postgraduate Diploma Programme. ICTP Leading New Wellcome-Funded Anti-Malaria Initiative

A new research consortium led by ICTP and funded by Wellcome has launched to help improve guidance in public health responses to malaria control. The project aims to address a key question concerning the attribution of climate change in health, namely to determine how much long-term changes in climate have helped or hindered the efforts of national malaria control programs to reduce or eliminate malaria transmission rates in Africa. New Video Series Showcases Arab Fund Impact at ICTP

Thanks to a collaboration that began in 2024 between ICTP and the Arab Fund, 12 scientists from the Middle East and Northern Africa have had the possibility to spend one-month visits at ICTP through its Associates Programme and bring a student with them. Four of them are the protagonists of the latest videos in the series “Science is Our Common Language”, which focusses on the experience of current and former ICTP Associates to highlight the impact that the programme has had on their lives and careers. ICTP Global Science Portal Event for International Day of Women and Girls in Science

The ICTP Global Science Portal invites you to celebrate the 2026 International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS) with an online panel discussion on science career pathways for women from the global South. Female researchers are underrepresented in national science academies and publications, and tend to have shorter and less well-paid careers than their male counterparts. For this reason, the United Nations' IDWGS focusses on issues related to gender equality in science. Read more ...


ICTP-IBM AI Prize Seeks Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2026 ICTP-IBM Brahmagupta AI Prize for Early Career Scientists. ICTP and IBM established the annual prize for outstanding young researchers working in AI for Science/Science for AI in 2025. The goal is to promote research focusing on approaches to AI and science that can benefit the society at large. Read more ...
