ICTP's 60th Anniversary Celebrations

This year marks ICTP’s 60th anniversary and the celebrations include a long list of events that are going to take place throughout the year. International conferences featuring leading experts as well as special events, both public and institutional, will mark this important milestone and will constitute occasions to celebrate together with our national and international partners and collaborators. The first event took place on 22 January with a public dialogue featuring ICTP climate scientist Filippo Giorgi held at Trieste's Miramare Castle. Read more ...


ICTP Associates Video Series Celebrates 60 Years of the Programme

An important event taking place from 1 to 3 July 2024 at ICTP will mark the ICTP Associates Programme’s 60th anniversary. As the celebrations are approaching, ICTP is pleased to release the video series “Science is Our Common Language”, featuring some of the current associates. The first episode features Luis Foa Torres, a professor of physics at the University of Chile, and the 2018 recipient of the ICTP Prize. Read more ...


Support for Arab Science

ICTP and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development have launched a support programme for advancing the capabilities of Arab researchers and students in science and technology. A new agreement between the two organizations benefits Arab scientists residing in their home countries or other Arab Fund countries who want to participate in a range of ICTP training and education programmes. Spirit of Salam Awardees 2024 Announced

Three people have been named as recipients of the 2024 Spirit of Abdus Salam Award for their longterm dedication to the Centre's scientific excellence and social well-being. The recipients are: Rosanna Sain, the former secretary of ICTP's High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics (HECAP) section; Luciano Maiani, the chairperson of the ICTP Scientific Council from 2011 to 2022; and Fabio Zwirner, the representative of the Italian Government on the ICTP Steering Committee, as well as its chair, from 2014 to 2022. A Stellar Discovery: ICTP Researcher Uncovers Potentially the Earliest Known Astronomical Chart

ICTP researcher Federico Bernardini recently discovered two unusually carved stones at the entrance of a key ancient fortification site near Trieste. The stones are circular, around 50 cm in diameter and 30 cm deep, with particular markings showing them to be astronomical charts. One of these could be the oldest star chart ever discovered.
