 ICTP Launches Global Scientific PortalICTP is greeting the new year with the launch of a dynamic, interactive internet portal that aims to promote the Centre's activities and achievements as well as encourage international scientific networking. Accessible at www.ictp.it, the portal represents the first phase of what the Centre plans to be a global scientific portal that will encourage networking amongst ICTP's vast international community of physicists and mathematicians. The goal is to reinforce the connections that scientists make through their participation in ICTP activities and programmes. It was designed with mobility in mind: its responsive design optimises viewing on mobile devices. ICTP welcomes feedback about the new portal. Users can send their comments to pio@ictp.it.  Salam Distinguished Lectures 2023In January, ICTP was pleased to showcase theoretical physicist Sandu Popescu, professor of physics at the University of Bristol, UK, as the speaker for its 2023 Salam Distinguished Lectures series. Popescu delivered three lectures on topics related to the fundamental aspects of quantum physics: The smallest possible thermal machines and the foundations of thermodynamics; quantum non-locality and beyond; and multiple-time states and the flow of time in quantum mechanics.  Michele Parrinello Delivers Joint ColloquiumMichele Parrinello of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), Genoa, Italy, came to ICTP on Monday, 30 January for a Joint Colloquium with the Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA). In his talk, titled “The Physics of Catalysis,” Parrinello proposed that the development of efficient catalysts is key to a green economy transition; there is a need to devise an energy-efficient production of hydrogen or an economical and environment friendly CO2 sequestration process.  Spirit of Salam Awardees AnnouncedThe family of ICTP founder and Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam has revealed the recipients of the 2023 Spirit of Abdus Salam Award. Announced annually on Abdus Salam’s birthday, 29 January, the award recognizes those who, like Salam himself, have worked tirelessly to promote the development of science and technology in disadvantaged parts of the world. This year’s Spirit of Abdus Salam Award recipients are: Tino Nyawelo, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, a 1998 graduate of ICTP's Postgraduate Diploma Programme who has supported STEM education; Hugo Rojas, Instituto de Cybernetics Mathematics and Physics, Cuba, who has advocated for science in his home country and the region; and Federico Rosei, Institut National Recherche Scientifique, Montréal, Canada, who has shown strong international science leadership.
