ICTP Prize 2022 Celebration

ICTP celebrated the two winners of the 2022 ICTP Prize with a ceremony on Wednesday 21 June. The recipients -- Shant Baghram of the Sharif University of Technology and Mohammad Hossein Namjoo of the Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences, both in Iran -- shared the Prize for their pioneering contributions to developing robust theoretical, computational and statistical frameworks to compare theoretical predictions for various cosmological and astrophysical phenomena with high-precision observational data. After receiving their prizes, the two physicists gave lectures on their research: Baghram's talk was on Large Scale Structure of the Universe: Beyond the Standard Model of Cosmology, while Namjoo lectured on Probing the Primordial Universe Using Heavy Particles. The ceremony was recorded and can be viewed on ICTP's YouTube channel; photos of the ceremony have been posted to ICTP's Flickr account. The winners were interviewed about their passion for physics. Dive into Particle Physics

International participants gathered at ICTP for two weeks in June to attend the centre's High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics (HECAP) section's yearly Summer School co-sponsored by the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), which this year focused on particle physics. Researchers from Caltech, CERN and the Universities of Goettingen, Oxford, Durham and Maryland each gave a series of lectures on topics ranging from the Standard Model to the Physics of Dark Sectors, providing students with a deep insight into various aspects of particle physics. Young Scientists Tackle High-dimensional Science

ICTP hosted its fourth edition of the “Youth in High Dimensions - Recent Progress in Machine Learning, High-Dimensional Statistics and Inference” event; an array of seminars on high-dimensional scientific problems. The meeting showcased the work of young international researchers from academia and industry on machine learning, high-dimensional statistics and inference. “Youth in High Dimensions” is becoming a key recurring event in a diverse and rapidly expanding community of physicists, computer scientists, mathematicians, information theorists and engineers who study high-dimensional statistics. ICTP Hosts Workshop on the Quantitative Science of Inequality

What is inequality from a mathematical perspective? What are its scope and limitations, and how does inequality function at various scales and in different situations? ICTP's recent Workshop on Inequality Across Scales, Space, Time and Domains, focused on these questions, bringing together physicists working on problems from demography, economics, political science, sociology, ecology, biology and neuroscience. An ICTP article highlights the workshop and the organisers' future plans. Read more ...

ICTP Prize 1998 Recipient Honoured

ICTP congratulates string theorist Anamaria Font on being named the 2023 L'Oreal-UNESCO Laureate in Physics for Latin America and the Caribbean. In 1998, Font was awarded the ICTP Prize, together with Fernando Quevedo, for contributions to string theory. Read more ...

Enriching Mathematics Lessons

ICTP's Mathematics Diploma Programme recently offered its students the chance to expand their numerical knowledge thanks to the help of two guest lecturers. The lecturers -- Luca Di Cerbo from the mathematics department at the University of Florida (UF), USA, and ICTP mathematics postdoc Chao Li -- lectured on modern geometric analysis from 19 to 23 June, together with Mathematics section head Claudio Arezzo. Di Cerbo was an ICTP senior postdoc during the academic year 2016 – 2017. Read more ...

New Research on Quantum Simulation Published

In a new proposal published in PRX Quantum, an international team of scientists, including some from ICTP, has introduced a novel method for quantum simulation of U(1) lattice gauge theories coupled to matter. This constitutes a first step towards realizing more complex gauge theories in order to study phenomena related to high-energy physics. By utilizing alkaline-earth(-like) atoms in state-dependent optical lattices, this proposal enables the study of gauge and fermionic-matter fields simultaneously in one and two dimensions.
