ICTP Associates in the Spotlight: Elizabeth Gasparim

Elizabeth Gasparim, a mathematician carrying out research in geometry, has progressed through ICTP's Associates programme, from junior to currently senior associate, as well as a Simons associate in between. Before spending time at ICTP, Gasparim had felt quite isolated in her research. Things changed when she arrived at the Centre: "After only a couple of months I had learnt more at ICTP than I had during all of my graduate studies," said Gasparim in a recent interview.

ICTP Climate Scientist Among the Authors of First European Climate Risk Assessment

The first ever European Climate Risk Assessment (EUCRA), published on 11 March by the European Environment Agency (EEA), shows that Europe is not prepared for rapidly growing climate risks. ICTP researcher Cyril Caminade of ICTP's Earth System Physics section co-authored the report's health chapter, which states that heat is the gravest and most urgent climate risk driver for human health, with the most exposed and most vulnerable population groups more at risk. Biodiversity Promotes Stability

A study by ICTP and OGS researcher Onofrio Mazzarisi and co-authors, published in the journal Science, shows that loss of biodiversity may accelerate the destabilisation of ecosystems. The model chosen by the researchers to study population dynamics shows that the more species compete against each other for resources in a certain ecosystem, the more stable the system becomes. Therefore, an increase in biodiversity brings stability, in contrast with most theoretical arguments formulated so far. Read more ...

ICTP and Indonesia Sign Research Agreement

ICTP has signed an agreement with the Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to promote scientific capacity building and collaboration. The agreement paves the way for research cooperation in numerous fields of ICTP expertise, including geoscience, medical physics, renewable energy, and computing scientific instrumentation. Advancing Towards Universal Affordable Energy: An Interview with IAEA Nuclear Waste Expert Willie Meyer

The need to increase access to affordable electricity through new green sources has sparked many developing countries’ interest in nuclear energy. ICTP's UN partner, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), accompanies its member states during the long process of nuclearization and ensures that their practices comply with the Agency’s standards in important domains such as nuclear safety and security. At ICTP for a workshop on nuclear waste storage, IAEA specialist Willie Meyer described best practices in the field. Read more ...

Call for Nominations, 2024 Dirac Medal

ICTP is now accepting nominations for its premier physics prize, the Dirac Medal. First awarded in 1985, the Dirac Medal is given in honour of P.A.M. Dirac, one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century and a staunch friend of the Centre. It is awarded annually on Dirac's birthday, 8 August, to scientists who have made significant contributions to theoretical physics. The deadline for receipt of nominations is 14 June 2024.
