New HECAP Staff Scientist Agnese Bissi Delivers Colloquium

Agnese Bissi, a researcher in ICTP's High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics section, presented an ICTP Colloquium on "The conformal bootstrap: from boiling water to quantum gravity" on 15 March. The talk was recorded and can be viewed on ICTP's YouTube channel. Bissi's research interests include conformal field theories and quantum gravity theories with particular interest to the conformal bootstrap. In addition to her role within ICTP, Agnese Bissi is Associate Professor of Theoretical Physics at Uppsala University (Sweden). Read more ...

ICTP Research Sheds Light on the Microscopic Origins of Collective Dynamics in Liquid Water

Water is ubiquitous in nature and everyday life, and its unique physico-chemical behaviour constitutes a key ingredient of every known lifeform. The uniqueness of water is due to both the spatial arrangement adopted by its molecules and the strong interactions between them (namely hydrogen bonds) that connect the molecules in an extended network. A major hurdle faced by scientists is related to understanding the role this underlying hydrogen-bond network plays in water dynamics. A new open-access paper by researchers in ICTP's Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics section published in Nature Communications describes the relationship between hydrogen-bond network reorganisation and collective reorientational dynamics in liquid water. Call for Proposals, ICTP's 2024 Scientific Calendar

ICTP is planning its 2024 offering of conferences, workshops and schools—also known as its Scientific Calendar—and seeks proposals from the international scientific community for activities to include. The deadline for 2024 activity proposals is 30 April 2023.

ICTP Scientific Calendar activities attract thousands of participants to the Centre, or online, every year, offering a unique opportunity for scientists from developing and emerging countries—the main target of the activities—to receive training not available in their home countries, and to meet with ICTP’s international network of scientists. New for 2024, ICTP is pleased to announce that the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation will be funding one of its Scientific Calendar activities for that year. For more details and to submit a proposal online, go to the Scientific Calendar proposal guidelines page. Read more ...

The Unusual World of Nano-refrigerators

The current need to transition from non-renewable sources to green energy has prompted significant interest in efficient energy conversion. Methods that employ optimal thermal transport have accordingly become a focus of theoretical and experimental work within physics and nanotechnology. A new paper from ICTP researchers describes how they used a combination of Molecular Dynamics simulations and Stochastic Thermodynamics theoretical insights to describe heat transfer between two nanoparticles held at different temperatures, which interacted through nonreciprocal forces, i.e., forces that violate Newton's "action = reaction" 3rd law. Opportunities

ICTP Sandwich Training Educational Programme (STEP)

Through its Sandwich Training Educational Programme (STEP), ICTP and its UN partner, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), offer fellowships to PhD students from developing countries in the fields of physics, mathematics and related fields. STEP fellowships enrich their doctoral studies by giving students access to ICTP's and the IAEA's international community and world-class research and training facilities. The application deadline is 15 April 2023. Read more ...

Call for Applications: Master in High Performance Computing

The Master in High Performance Computing (MHPC) programme, coordinated by ICTP and the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA), is now accepting applications for the 2023-2024 academic year. As in prior years, ICTP is providing scholarships for applicants from developing countries. The deadline for such candidates is 30 April 2023. Applicants should use the MHPC online application form; instructions are here.

Master of Advanced Studies in Medical Physics

The Master of Advanced Studies in Medical Physics (MMP) is a two-year advanced training programme run jointly by the ICTP and the University of Trieste. The programme is designed to provide young, promising graduates of physics or related fields (mainly from developing countries) with postgraduate theoretical and clinical training so that they may be recognised as clinical medical physicists in their home countries. The application deadline is 30 April. Read more...
