Celebrating Quantum Science

World-leading experts in quantum physics, including several Nobel laureates, convened at ICTP from 28 to 30 May for an international conference celebrating quantum science. Titled “Quantum Physics: from Foundations to Emerging Technologies”, and co-sponsored by the Italian Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, the event anchored a week of ICTP conferences and public events celebrating the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. The Quantum Kilogram: ICTP-SISSA Joint Public Event features Nobel Laureate William Phillips and Professor Vanderlei Bagnato

In an entertaining, one-hour public performance involving the use of lasers, pendulums and voltmeters, Nobel Laureate William Phillips, appearing online, and Professor Vanderlei Bagnato of Sao Paulo University highlighted how quantum physics has changed our standard system of units. United Nations Hosts Special Session on ICTP

On Friday 9 May, ICTP’s 60th anniversary was celebrated at the United Nations’ headquarters, in New York. Some 200 representatives of the UN’s member countries attended the event “Advancing Global Scientific Cooperation for Sustainable Development: Leveraging Quantum Science for a Resilient Future” organised by the Permanent Mission of Italy to the UN and by UNESCO. Four Scholars Named ICTP Institute Associates

Four researchers with longtime connections to ICTP have been appointed Institute Associates in recognition of their service and commitment to ICTP’s mission. Imrana Ashraf of Pakistan, Karen Hallberg of Argentina, Swadesh Mahajan of India and the US, and Narayan Adhikari of Nepal have long been associated with ICTP and have contributed to its mission in multiple ways – from mentoring students to organizing conferences and training scientists working in the developing world. ICTP Gathering Friends and Building Support in the U.S.

In early May, ICTP travelled to the United States for a series of events that combined meaningful engagement with friends and supporters, and an important institutional celebration at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. On both the East and West Coasts, ICTP organized a number of informal get-togethers, generously hosted by long-time friends and supporters—including the family of ICTP Founder Abdus Salam and members of ICTP’s Advisory Board—who welcomed guests into their homes. New User Portfolio Feature on the ICTP Global Science Portal

The ICTP Global Science Portal is first and foremost a platform for researchers across the world to connect and promote themselves. With this in mind, the ICTP Portal team recently added a Portfolio feature in user profiles. Now, users can upload and organise any type of media on their personal Portfolio, from external links to lectures and papers.
