Physics Without Frontiers Turns 10

Physics Without Frontiers (PWF), ICTP's flagship outreach programme for university students, is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. What started as one physics master class roadshow by a small group of volunteer scientists from ICTP and CERN for university students in Palestine has blossomed into an international network of instructors catering to the science education needs of regions throughout the developing world.

The programme celebrated its 10th anniversary with a hybrid event at ICTP on 22 November. The event included talks by alumni as well as discussions highlighting the impact of PWF's activities that have taken place in every corner of the world.

World Science Day is celebrated every year on 10 November to encourage dialogue between the scientific community and the general public. This year's theme focusses on basic science, in line with the UN's 2022 International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development. Read more...

Studying Learning

A new paper published in PNAS by Alessandro Ingrosso, a senior postdoctoral fellow in ICTP's Quantitative Life Sciences section, and SISSA researcher Sebastian Goldt, addresses the way in which neural networks learn, i.e. the way in which they build their learning structures, in relation with the input data they are given.
Titled "Data-driven emergence of convolutional structure in neural networks", the paper investigates how neural networks can autonomously discover significant symmetries in their input data, which are crucial in the learning process. Read more...
