In Memoriam: Karim Aoudia

ICTP is mourning the sudden passing of Abdelkrim (Karim) Aoudia, a geophysicist and seismologist in the Centre's Earth System Physics (ESP) section. He was currently acting head of ESP and coordinator of that section's Solid-Earth Geophysics Research Group, as well as the ICTP focal point for a number of international associations and funding agencies. Ramanujan Prize 2025 Announced

ICTP and the International Mathematical Union (IMU) have awarded the 2025 Ramanujan Prize for young mathematicians from developing countries to Claudio Muñoz of the University of Chile for his fundamental contributions to dispersive partial differential equations. The award recognizes his remarkable work on the long-time behaviour of solutions to fundamental equations of mathematical physics, in particular on the asymptotic stability of soliton solutions and the dynamics of multi-solitons. Call for Nominations, ICTP-IBM Quantum Computing Prize

The call for nominations for the new ICTP-IBM Richard Feynman Prize in Quantum Computing is now open. The prize, named in honour of quantum mechanics pioneer Richard Feynman, is open to established career researchers who have made significant contributions to the field of quantum computing, including theory, algorithms, applications, or simulations. It is intended to be a top award in its field, on a par with ICTP's prestigious Dirac Medal for theoretical physics, and to be awarded annually at a yearly conference co-sponsored by ICTP and IBM. Connecting Africa: An Interview with African Internet Pioneer Nii Quaynor

Nii Quaynor is a scientist and engineer from Ghana, known for the major role he has played in connecting Africa to the internet. Quaynor visited ICTP last September as a keynote speaker at the Workshop on Empowering Connectivity: Bridging Space and Earth with DTN organised by ICTP’s Science, Technology and Innovation unit. ICTP Researcher Erika Coppola Receives the 2025 Motumundi Prize

Erika Coppola, a research scientist in ICTP’s Earth System Physics section, has been awarded the 2025 Motumundi Prize by the association Cinzia Vitale Onlus. The award recognises Coppola's role as Coordinating Lead Author of a chapter in the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Seventh Assessment Report; she is the only Italian to be chosen for this role. ICTP Celebrates Partnerships and Launches Campaign for International Science Complex and Strategic Plan

On Tuesday 21 October, Simons Foundation International President David Spergel and ICTP Director Atish Dabholkar hosted a special event in New York City for friends and supporters of ICTP to celebrate the international partnership fueling the project to transform the Adriatico Guest House into a state-of-the-art, modern International Science Complex. ICTP Global Science Portal Online Autumn Seminars

The ICTP Global Science Portal began its autumn online seminar series in October with discussions and Q&As on science careers and outreach in northern Pakistan. Seminars in the series are accessible both on Zoom/YouTube, and on the Portal Media Center afterwards. New events are regularly updated on the Events listings. Medical Physics Honour for Luciano Bertocchi

Luciano Bertocchi has been honoured by the Italian Association for Medical Physics (AIFM) with the title of Honorary Member, acknowledging Bertocchi’s lifelong efforts to promote medical physics, both in Italy and throughout the developing world. At ICTP, Bertocchi has been a cornerstone of all activities in medical physics, culminating with its Master's Programme in Medical Physics (MMP). Read more ...
